Description

Learn the secrets of making quilted portraits, from whimsical and cartoon-like silly selfie postcards to accurately proportioned quilted portraits. You will discover that it isn’t nearly as hard as you imagined. Learn to choose your photo, draft a pattern, and create a fusible appliqué quilted portrait.

No sewing machine required.

• Get helpful tips for very beginners - learning to draw faces
• Get seriously silly fun making cartoon self portraits as we learn the concepts of placement and proportion in portraiture
• Learn what makes a photo easy to work with
• Use your own photo to learn how to trace  and create a pattern for textile appliqué
• Also have the choice to use a practice photo that Lyric provides
• Learn to make decisions about how to capture the character of your subject
• Learn how to enlarge your pattern
• Also be able to choose to print one of the patterns Lyric provides to learn the techniques
• Learn the basic techniques for how to easily transfer your pattern to fused fabric
• Learn tips and tricks for layering and fabric choices in appliquéd portrait construction
• Learn how to sew down the shapes in your fused portrait

Lyric will be teaching her Playful Portraiture class online in real-time. You can ask questions live + share your work with Lyric and other students, all from the comfort of your own home. New to online classes? No worries! We are here to answer all of your questions and will provide you with resources for a successful and fun learning experience. Lyric Montgomery Kinard is an award winning artist with a passion for sparking the creativity that she knows each of her students posses. With playful support and gentle encouragement she will take you through your first steps on a new path, seeing the world through the eyes of an artist. As an artist, author, and educator she transforms cloth into art in her studio and timid spirits into confident creatives in the classroom.

Lyric was recognized for her talents as the 2011 International Association of Professional Quilters Teacher of the Year and is the author of the book Art + Quilt: design principles and creativity exercises. She has written extensively for Quilting Arts Magazine, appeared on Quilting Arts TV, and The Quilt Show. In her past life she was a musician, earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Utah and has also formally studied architecture.
