Over 350 quilts antique and new quilts will be on display this year. Besides a wonderful collection of antique quilts, Festival visitors will get in-depth looks at the work of four American quiltmakers (Barbara Barber, Frances Brand, Georgia Bonesteel, and Molly Upton), plus quilts by our talented teaching staff, the contest for new work, the Pilgrim/Roy Challenge Quilts from P&B Textiles, "Dear Jane" quilts in the style of Jane A. Stickle, and a special selection from Vermont's famed Shelburne Museum.

The exhibit of works by our teachers and judges is underwritten by Springs Industries of Rock Hill, SC; the Upton and Brand exhibits are sponsored by Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. Special Exhibits:
"Two Visionaries" and "Good Humor Keeps Us in Stitches"

"Two Visionaries" aptly describes a pair of exhibits in Plumley Armory linking two very different women with 60 years difference in their ages.

Molly Upton's meteoric career ended with her tragic death, at age 25, in 1977. Her legacy to us is a collection of brilliant quilts, precocious for their time and still astonishing in their range of concepts and execution. Last seen as a group in 1983, this exhibit celebrates Molly's rare talent. Nancy Halpern of Natick, MA, is curator of the Upton exhibit.

Francis Abell Brand of West Dennis, MA, now in her mid-80's, is a visionary whose interests, talents and abilities enbraced all of the early American decorative arts. Only in her quilts do we see other disciplines combined in such a unique and successful manner. VQF Board member Gerald Roy of Warner, NH, and Barbara Wysocki of Rocky Hill, CT, are co-curators of the Brand exhibit.

"Good Humor Keeps Us in Stitches" is Barbara Barber's contribution to a good laugh. This talented quiltmaker from the smallest state contributes some of her own quilts, as well as those of other quilters with a sense of humor, to what promises to be a rib-tickling exhibit.

In addition, Barbara's own eclectic oeuvre is the subject of a second special exhibit. From the sublime to the silly, her work is a treat for the eye.

"Two Visionaries" is presented by Quilter's Newsletter Magazine , a sponsor of the 2000 Vermont Quilt Festival.

Dear Jane Reunion

As we celebrate the new century, we are also celebrating the life of Jane Stickle and her beautiful 1863 quilt. Everyone is invited to participate in the special events of the Festival, which include a unique exhibit of quilts, show and tell, and a boxed dinner. Bring your quilt or work in progress and join quilters from all over the world in this special time of sharing and friendship.

The Sugarbush Resort in near-by Warren has reserved a block of rooms for people who are coming for the reunion. Reservations may be made by either calling 800-53-SUGAR, or by going through the Resort's website - www.sugarbush.com. Ask for the rooms under the Dear Jane Reunion block.

The Dear Jane Reunion is underwritten by EZ Quilting by Wrights, a sponsor of the 2000 Vermont Quilt Festival.

Concurrent with the VQF:
The 20th Annual Festival of Vermont Crafts

The VQF is pleased to welcome some of Vermont's best craftspeople back to the Norwich campus in 2000 when Vermont Hand Crafters, Inc., presents its 20th annual summer show. At 47 years of age, Vermont Hand Crafters is the oldest juried crafts organization in the state.

The summer show features the best in original designs and traditional crafts by some of Vermont's most skilled artisans. The work of new members will receive special attention at the show, while members will demonstrate their skills on site.

The show will be held Friday and Saturday, July 21 and 22, from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M., and Sunday, July 23, from 9:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. in a tent adjacent to Shapiro Field House.

Admission to the craft show is $2.00 per person, payable at the Hand Crafters tent. Admission to each show is separate this year.
