505 – Quilt As Desired

Level: Beginning/Intermediate

Instructor: Harriet Hargrave

Harriet feels that there is a definite lack of basic information in quilt making that causes endless frustration and problems for quilt makers and quilts alike.  This class is structured as a lecture/discussion/roundtable format so that it is based on group participation.  It has been very successful even though students don’t feel they could learn enough without sewing.  Think again—you can sew at home but where do you go for ideas and help once the problems occur?  Students have the opportunity to bring their problems to a troubleshooting situation and everyone learns from other’s problems.  A very comfortable and non-threatening atmosphere is generated.  Students are required to bring their quilt tops and quilts to class so that problems can be seen as they are discussed, as well as get ideas for batting choices, stencil designs, quilting ideas, marking tools, caring for quilted quilts, etc.  This class is a natural progression for beginning machine-quilting students.  Back to basics; tips and techniques; no sewing. Supply List:  14, 20—short list plus bring quilt tops!

506 - Broderie Perse

Level:  Intermediate

Instructor: Bettina Havig

www.bettinahavig.com

A technique from the early 19th century that “old is new again.”  Learn how to master cut-out fabric appliqué.  The project will be modest, a 14”- 16” panel suitable for a pillow, sham, or central panel in a larger wall quilt.  Back to basics; tips and techniques; hand sewing. Supply List:  1, 3 (to match background fabric), 4 (12” ruler), 8, 9, 10 (and small, sharp to the point scissors), 12, 14, optional compass, 20.   Fabric:  ½ yd. of background solid color; ½ yd. of voile, organdy, fine tulle or bridal net or very sheer batiste—any light color.  Assortment of fabrics from which you can cut whole flowers, birds, leaves, or other motifs.

507 – Appliqué Borders: An Added Grace

Level:   All

Instructor: Jeana Kimball

Learn to analyze a quilt for an appliqué border, as well as learn how simply an appliqué border can be drafted and/or adapted to your pieced or appliquéd quilt top.  This class will take the mystery out of designing an appliqué border.  Students can bring their own quilt top for discussion and suggestions.  Back to basics; tips and techniques; no sewing.  Supply List:  11, 13, 15, quilt top you would like to border; 2 sheets of 8 ½”x11” paper; small ruler.

508 - Drafting Feathers

Instructor: Gwen Marston

This workshop is an in-depth study of the ever-popular and versatile feather designs.  Quilters will learn how to draft many feather variations.  And the best part of this class is that Gwen’s methods for drawing feathers is easy and fast.  Take this class and you’ll leave feeling happy and feather confident.  Tips and techniques; design and stretching; no sewing.  Supply List:  11,13, 14 (15 sheets of sketch paper), 18.
