Remember to ask the instructor's permission before photographing or taping a class or class project. We also ask that you turn the sound off on your cell phones or pagers before the class.

301 – The Fine Art of Hand Quilting

Level:  Beginning

Instructor: Bettina Havig

This 15” pillow sampler is designed to sharpen your quilting skills.  A pattern will be provided and students will use several different marking techniques.  Class discussion will include information about batting selection, threads and needles.  Back to basics; tips and techniques; hand sewing.  Supply List:  1 (quilting, size 8 or smaller), 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 (pencil and sharpener, silver pencil and/or washable graphite pencil), 18” ruler, see-through or gridded, basting needle (i.e., a long fine needle), ½” or _” masking tape, 12”-14” quilting hoop.  Fabric:  ½ yd. white, ivory or other light color solid fabric, NO WHITE ON WHITE.  Unbleached, perma-press muslin is great.  (The white on white or white on muslin prints are difficult to stitch because of the printing process used.)  Batting suggestions: 18” square of one of the following:  Hobbs Thermore, Heirloom Cotton, Organic Cotton or Heirloom Wool; Mountain Mist light or mini-light; Fairfield Soft Touch Cotton or Low Loft; Quilters Dream Cotton Request Loft.

302 – Needle-turn and Template Free Basics

Level:  All

Instructor: Jeana Kimball

 

Jeana will gently guide you through her techniques for quick and easy preparation for appliqué, through basic needle-turn techniques and on to stitching perfect points and circles.  When the class is finished, you will wonder why you ever thought appliqué was difficult!  Back to basics; tips and techniques; hand sewing.  Supply List:  8, 10, 13, cotton hand quilting thread (Coats or YLI brands); 8” square background fabric; small scraps of cotton fabric (project is a simple flower pot with one flower, a stem and two leaves).

303 – Quilt Commentary—Seminar Form

Level:  All

Instructor: Gerald Roy

 

This is an opportunity for quilt owners to bring their antique quilts or vintage quilts and learn about them.  All but value will be discussed.  This situation gives everyone in the class an opportunity to learn, not only about their own quilts but from all other examples.  Supply List:  Two quilts each; one from each participant will be the subject of examination and the others as time permits.  Note taking materials optional.

304 - Tricky Hand Piecing

Level:  Beginning

Focus on tips that can accelerate the work and maintain maximum accuracy and simplify construction.  You will be so sly after this workshop that you may find hand piecing more satisfying than you thought possible!  Back to basics; tips and techniques; hand sewing.  Supply List:  1 (quilting), 3 (neutral), 4 (not for rotary cutting, just a simple ruler), 6 (plastic, no grid), 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (plus sharpener), very fine point permanent black pen, pencils in colors that will be visible on your fabrics, sheet of very fine sandpaper, 2-3 small Ziploc bags.  Fabric:  scraps, or ⅛ yd. each of a light, medium and dark. 

305 – Hand Quilting: What and How to Quilt

Level:  All

Instructor: Jeana Kimball

 

Your quilt top is finished and you are ready to quilt but you are confronted with all kinds of questions.  How shall I quilt this? What kinds of designs can I choose from? The list of questions can go on and on.  This class can help you better understand what the choices are and what factors to consider so that you can make informed decisions.  Back to basics; no sewing.  Supply List:  13, 14; finished quilt top ready for quilting design analysis (optional).

306 - Appliqué for Realism in Brief

Level:   Advanced

Instructor: Charlotte Warr Andersen

A demonstration using photos to make patterns for realistic appliqué figures and class project featuring reverse layering.  An intricate study in appliqué and reverse appliqué.  Design and stretching; hand sewing.  Supply List:    1, 3, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18, small, fine scissors that cut all the way to the point, removable fabric markers, masking tape, if you have a light box and can bring it, please do so.  Fabrics:  ¼ yd. each of 4 to 6 different gray fabrics (solids only!) ranging in value from dark to light and all of a similar hue.  Include black and white in addition to grays, if desired.  (NOTE: Another color besides gray may be chosen, but gray is safe.  If opting for another color make sure to have 4 to 6 light to dark values of that color.)  Optional: ½ yd. pastel color (can be print) of your choice for background.  Project choices will be Dancer’s Head or Anthony the Rabbit.

307 - Let Me Surprise You! 

Level:  Intermediate

Materials fee: $85.00 (pre-cut fabric kit)

A complete, pre-cut, ready to sew fabric kit that is designed just for The Vermont Quilt Festival will be provided.  Spend the day sewing and having a great time.  No worry about bringing the right fabric—it will be there!  It is a surprise; you don’t get to pick pattern, color or style and no hints will be given.  Get in here and let’s make a quilt! This is a totally different quilt and fabric from the Let Me Surprise You class on Saturday and $95.00 kit!  Patterns and projects; machine sewing. Supply List:  2, 5 (for sub-cutting, not always needed), 8, 12.  You will get complete instructions and a color picture with class, but some students might want to bring a camera to get more pictures of the quilt.

308 - Creating Captivating Colorful Quilts-Color for Quilters

Level:  All

Instructor: Wendy Butler Berns

 

Materials fee:  $5.00 (kit) 

(optional pattern $7.00)

Come discover a new color confidence.  During the morning, we will take a no sew approach to playing with fabric.  Then in the afternoon, students can continue their no sew morning color exploration or begin machine stitching a small wall hanging with their new color choices.  Tips and techniques; design and stretching; machine sewing optional.  Supply List:  2 (optional), 5 (for machine sewing option), 10, 11, 12 (for machine sewing option), 13, 15, 19, 20.
